BUH-BYE TO ANOTHER SAN FERNANDO VALLEY LANDMARK
Corky's Diner on Van Nuys Blvd has been a popular spot for 61 years. Anyone who grew up in the San Fernando Valley has stories to share about going to breakfast with their grandparents.
Originally designed by innovative LA architects Armet and Davis, Corky’s originally opened as Stanley Burke’s Coffee Shop in 1958.
The architecture firm
was central to the building style still seen throughout Los
Angeles, including Simply Wholesome. The Sherman Oaks Patch
reports that the current name change occurred in the early
1960s.
In the 1980s,
Corky’s underwent another name change to the Lamplighter. This
remained until a 2010 remodel, where original features were
restored along with a prominent new Corky’s
sign.
The diner was a hot spot for movies such as A Nightmare On Elm Street and countless commercials, television shows.
In a
Sunday night post on Facebook, the diner announced it
will shutter December 15. The obvious and expected reaction
by the public has been the fear of
demolition.
Although no permits have been officially pulled, anyone who has been involved in development proceedings knows permits mean very little to developers. Despite what the laws read, despite environmental regulations that must be followed, notice to the public, proper postings and guidelines to follow. . . When developers smell the public going after a preservation effort, structures have mysterious ways of crumbling.
Efforts by members of the community (many native to the SFV) are working to nominate Corky's as a Historic Cultural Monument.
With elections coming up, Sherman Oaks Councilmember David Ryu has reported in support of the nomination. But SFVNC will keep a close watch and report any backroom deals Ryu may attempt while wheeling with developers interested in razing this irreplaceable iconic diner.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
19 Rent Control units in this 1961 apartment building are set for demolition.
All of the building's tenants (most of them long term) have been evicted via the Ellis Act.
Thanks Councilmember David Ryu for your loyal support to the developers who continue
to gentrify our neighborhoods.
You have once again left your voters high and dry.
Tenants continue to get evicted every day. Where are they supposed to go?

IT DOESN'T COST AS MUCH AS YOU THINK TO BUY COUNCILMEMBER DAVID RYU
Despite severe community opposition, Councilmember Ryu has lent his support to the controversial
Horace Heidts project at 14155 Magnolia Blvd;
for a small fee of course. . .
The above report taken from the LA Ethics Commission shows Horace Heidts "lobbying" $2,350 in exchange for approval of a Zone Change,
otherwise known as "spot-zoning".
The proposal demolish's 5 existing affordable houses, removes and kills a few dozen mature trees,
to build a 2-story, 35 foot building of 21 Luxury Units with 66 parking spaces.

HEY SHERMAN OAKS RESIDENTS!!
Did you know your Neighborhood Council; the Board YOU elected to represent your community -
has one of the top paid attorneys for developers in charge of Land Use?
That's right. Alicia Bartley is an Associate at Gaines & Stacey LLP, one of the top paid Law Firms that represent developers.
So why is Alicia Bartley sitting on the Planning And Land Use Committee - having the authority to allow her
clients permission to invade your neighborhood?

EVICTION DEFENSE NETWORK (EDN) GALA
Thursday September 14, 2017
WHO IS THE EVICTION DEFENSE NETWORK AND WHY DOES SFVNC CARE ABOUT THEM?
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT THEM?
EVICTION DEFENSE NETWORK (EDN)
is responsible for helping with the eviction/displacement crisis that is happening across the city of Los Angeles.
Each year, EDN keeps thousands of people in their homes and from facing eviction defenseless in court. Many of these cases are due to landlord harassment to push low income tenants out of their homes. EDN receives NO PUBLIC FUNDING whatsoever to do this work.
They rely entirely on a sliding scale-fee model and the generosity of people to help them continue to operate.
Please consider attending EDN's fundraising GALA event tomorrow evening and help them close this gap so they can
continue to provide this vital resource in a city with tenants/residents under siege.
Every person we keep in their home, is a person off the street.

The PUBLIC
HEARING will be held on Monday

If you believe a private school should not get to RUIN Coldwater Canyon traffic for over THREE YEARS with hauling, excavation, and construction for a vanity project, if you prioritize our open space hillside land over a 3-story cement parking structure, if you think this is an over-reaching project and that students should remain safely on the East side where their current campus is,
PLEASE SPEAK UP at this important public hearing!
Not to mention Coldwater Canyon's flora and fauna utilized by a variety of wildlife that will be encroached upon.

July 24, 2017 9:00 a.m.

RIGHT NOW IN SHERMAN OAKS
This
adorable 1951 Single Family Dwelling in Sherman Oaks is currently
home to a couple just starting a family.
Shortly after locating the perfect neighborhood to raise their newborn, the postings began.
Nowhere in site are there any Small Lot Subdivisions to speak of.
This proposal seeks to demolish this quaint piece of history with 5 Small Lots with 6 inches between each building as seen below:
SALOMA HOLDINGS, LLC (Hagai Rappaport), Avi Galili Collaborative and Tala Associates believe this highly out of scale and inappropriate
luxury housing proposal is no problem for the neighborhood.
Members of the community have banded together to take measures into preserving the neighborhood they bought in to.
Keep your eye on this case and consider attending the Public Hearing on June 27, 2017.

URBAN-BLOX
continues to DEMOLISH RENT-CONTROL evicting tenants who have no place to go.
The Hermitage / Weddington project we've been following has more layers than an onion.
Developers Urban-Blox and their foul playing attorney's Alan Droste and Elisa Paster from Glaser Weil Fink Jacobs, slithered their way through the planning process despite not owning the Hermitage property, with a project
that does not comply with a single element of the cities General Plan.
Efforts were made to extort the property from two elderly owners, whose attorneys Jason Kirkpatrick and Danial Tripathi worked closely with Urban-Blox, to push one of the most stained and corrupt transactions we have ever seen.
Urban-Blox who is no stranger to lawsuits, is also being sued by one of the long-term residents of the property in a CEQA suit.
Why they would attempt to demolish this
property while being sued? Typical
Urban-Blox.
Stay tuned for more on this project. . .

WHAT'S NEW?
SOUTH VALLEY PLANNING COMMISSIONERS:
President Steve Cochran, Commissioner Mark Dierking and Commissioner Janny H. Kim
make some bad choices in this video from the July 14, 2016 hearing.
A Small Lot Subdivision proposed in the Valley Village area intending to demolish a total of 3 rent-control parcels,
3 dozen trees and remove the public street severely affecting parking.
Commissioner Rebecca Beatty expressed her discontent with the project having only 8 inches between buildings! While additionally stating this is "people's lives." Beatty and Mather voted to uphold the appeal.
The video is a must watch as to the 3 Commissioners who denied it. Pay special attention to their justification.
Additionally, you can't help but take note of District 2 Chief of Land Use Karo Torossian and the mumbling mess coming out of his mouth indicative of his committment to developers.

"The city itself admits that housing projects it approved during the past 10 years suffer from a huge vacancy rate of 12%,
and that this empty “market rate” housing is aimed at households earning more than $100,000.
Meanwhile, average people and the poor cannot find a place to rent.
Older apartments are being destroyed at a fast pace instead of being preserved,
and the City Council has no plan for preserving the older and inexpensive rental housing that
acts as the safety net for LA’s working class and middle class. " BusinessWire.com
Our Sherman Oaks team has been hitting the streets hard to get you the actual and factual truth about what is really going on in our neighborhoods.
TO THE ONES UNDER THE IMPRESSION WE ARE IN A HOUSING CRISIS:
There are currently 7 one bedroom's & 8 two bedroom vacant units that continue to sit at one of the infamous IMT buildings. These units START at $2300 a month.
Rent-control units in the area range from $1000 - $1750, several already planned for demolition.
It's not just the rent-control we are losing here but the buildings that were part of our original development to the area. The original grid and layout to our streets and landscape is being invaded.
It is up to us to protect our homes, our families and our environment.
SAYS THE CITY THEMSELVES
An excerpt from Chapter 1 of the Housing Needs Assessment, part of the Housing Element of the City of Los Angeles
admits there are more unoccupied housing units then there are people to occupy them. 44% vacant units.
IN THE LAST 16 YEARS - OCCUPIED HOUSING UNITS INCREASED BY ONLY 3.4% !!

The problem--Mansionization replaces older homes with oversized structures, often built by
speculators. The problem is not house size. It’s house size relative to lot size and neighborhood context.
